The translator’s repetition of simple words to describe emotions renders Tolstoy’s characters simpletons. I cannot believe that Tolstoy meant his characters to be the way they come across in the translation. I will read another translation before deciding that Tolstoy is highly over-rated.There is a lot of repetition regarding Napoleon’s mistaken rating as a genius and under-rating of Kutuzov. It felt like Tolstoy had some axes to grind and he did it six different ways. Is this the translator or Tolstoy?

I know now why they praised him so much. He is an artist with words. Paints the pictures of forest, muddy rutted roads, carriages, and people remarkably well, as anything else he chooses to describe. He must have remarkable recall of his youth. Interesting look into Russian society. So far no sex or violence but is still a good read.

Pros: It’s a large library of works by Tolstoy and it’s totally free. The formatting looks good for a free ebook.Cons: The translations are a bit uneven, albeit serviceable. The cover is ridiculous and THE AUTHOR’S NAME IS MISSPELLED.
