So you want to have an online shop and sell on Amazon, Etsy or Shopify? Why not, there are plenty of people making large amounts of money doing this, and there are also plenty of others making less but happily living good lives working for themselves.
There are though many folks who start-up an online business and struggle; they may sell a limited amount, or they may not even sell a single item. They may struggle to attract visitors to their shop, or they may have plenty of visitors, but they aren’t making a profit. Then they have to work out what it is they are doing wrong or are not doing at all.
Invariably they make the same two mistakes and that is why I wrote this book – to prevent people from making these two mistakes.
So what are these two mistakes?
The first mistake that sellers make is that they generalize when they should specialize. The internet has a long history now, you can no longer sell a range of items, you need to specialize. I see so many people start up on Shopify, as an example, and they might sell a few t-shirts, a couple of handbags, maybe some belts and that is it. In effect they are competing with huge department stores like Sears and Walmart, and usually with little or no money for advertising.
The second mistake that so many sellers make is that they don’t put enough thought into where their customers are going to come from before they start their business. Too often sellers have a “build it and they will come” attitude. This is because they get the causality wrong when it comes to starting a business. They think about what they want to sell, or what they can sell, and then wonder how to market the products. It needs to be the other way round. First learn about marketing, rankings and how the online shops and platforms operate and only then see what items you can sell given your knowledge of this and given your budget.
Understanding advertising and marketing and how these online shops operate is complicated but it is something you must master to increase the probability of your business being a success and you having a happy life.
This book isn’t going to give a step-by-step guide of how to list items for sale online. Amazon, Etsy and Shopify have all been around a long time now and it is straightforward to sell on those websites.
No, this book is mostly about those two mistakes that almost everyone makes that leads to their stores struggling to make money. It needs to be read before you think about what to sell online.
I am not going to say you will make money by reading this book, but I can guarantee that there is less chance of you losing money (and wasting your time) if you do. I will also say some things that I never see anyone else say.
There is a third mistake (chapter 6) that all business owners make and that is to start a business without sufficient money in the bank. This is the most common mistake by business owners. I also touch on this but it isn’t the main focus of the book since it is something you should already be aware of.
Chapter 7 is about troubleshooting. It is good to think about why some businesses fail before you start. Learn from others’ mistakes before you make your own.
Chapter 8 is about the many scammers out there, particularly on TikTok, who continually push this idea that there is easy money to be made even if you are broke and/or lazy if only you paid for their course. There never is.
Finally Chapter 9 is about how not to lose your business, and I know a thing or two about that.
First though we ask do you really want to have your own business? This isn’t such a silly question to ask and I want you to think very carefully before you decide to go ahead and start selling online.
